The Hamden Miners narrowly fell to the Meriden Riptide 7-6 in nine innings on Friday evening. Hamden had chances to win, leading 2-1 in the seventh and 6-2 in the eighth; however, could not close it out.

Senior starter Dylan Ellison threw five quality innings in the effort, allowing only three hits and one earned run. The Miners bullpen surrendered six runs in four innings of work.

Hamden collected an astonishing 13 walks in the game as seven out of the nine starters tallied a base on balls. Right fielder Devon McMorris and third baseman Tyler Kornacki each finished with three walks each.

Only a single Miner managed to record a base hit in the nine inning affair; but it was a huge one. First baseman Nico DiGioia belted a grand slam to left field in the top of the eighth inning to briefly put Hamden in front. The junior ended Meriden’s no-hitter with the big swing.

Hamden showed no mercy on the bases as the club collected their first three stolen bases on the year. Junior Peyton Torre swiped two bags as freshman Matthew Mangini also nabbed a stolen base.

It was a tough loss in Hamden’s opening matchup of 2026, but there were positives to look forward to as the Miners prepare to host the Danbury Lakehounds in their first home game on Sunday evening.
