After grabbing the initial lead in the first inning, Meriden scored five unanswered runs en route to defeat Hamden 5-1 Friday evening.
The Miners threatened early with the bases loaded with no outs in the top of the first inning. Freshman catcher Brady Dammling grounded into a fielder’s choice to bring home second baseman Devon McMorris for the game’s first run and give Hamden the lead.
Sophomore starter Sawyer DiMatteo pitched marvelously for the first three innings until allowing two runs to the Riptide in the fourth inning. DiMatteo finished his start throwing four innings of two run ball and striking out two. Luke Ryan and Mason McCarroll each threw an inning in relief of DiMatteo.
Despite a quite offensive showing with only three base hits, Hamden showed plenty of patience at the plate with six walks on the day. Designated hitter Matt West added the team’s only extra base hit on the day. Nico DiDioia and Devon McMorris each stole a base in the loss.
Dropping three straight, the Miners will have back-to-back opportunities at home to get back on track, starting with hosting the Waterbury Silverbacks on Sunday night.
