Hamden lost their opening exhibition game to Weston 5-1 Wednesday evening in Wilton, CT. The Barons took the lead in the bottom of the second inning and never looked back.

The Miners got on the board first after left fielder Nico DiGioia drove in second baseman Devon McMorris after grounding into a fielder’s choice to take an early 1-0 advantage in the top of the first.

Lefthander Sawyer Dimatteo surrendered the loss for Hamden on Tuesday as he threw two innings while giving up four runs, with only one of which being earned. Luke Ryan threw two shutout innings in relief as the McCarroll brothers, Mason and Griffin, each had scoreless innings of work, respectively.

Weston pitching kept Hamden at bay while only allowing three hits in seven innings. Shortstops Tyler DeCrescenzo and Pierce Cowles added hits while backstop John Diamond also added a base knock.

Errors hurt the Miners in the loss as the team committed four on the day, contributing to the four unearned runs Dimatteo allowed in his outing.

Despite the loss, Hamden showed good flashes on the basepaths. Three different Miners stole a base in the game; Pierce Cowles, Tyler DeCrescenzo and Devon McMorris each tallied their first stolen base in the effort.

Hamden opens up their regular season on the road June 5th against the Meriden Riptide at Ceppa Field.
